Now that I am finally home from the conference there is so much to reflect on. The experience that I was fortunate enough to have had is remarkable and one that I won’t soon forget. The amount of knowledge that i have acquired over the last week is incredible. I have never felt so sure and prepared for my future. All of the speakers at the conference gave an important piece of advice that I will use as I move forward in my life. That one key piece of information is to tell my story. I’m not quite sure what my story is yet and it is something that I must figure out soon, but I do know that the Washington and Journalism Media Conference has helped me and made an impact on my story.

The people that i have met while at the conference changed my life. They were all so welcoming and warm, the staff and students alike. But more then that i met people that had the same passion and drive that I have myself for journalism. I broke out of my shell in ways that I have never done before and most importantly I had an amazing time doing it all. I made connections and relationships that will last in the future and bring countless benefits. I can’t begin to say how thankful I am to have had this opportunity and plan to blog more about as time goes on . I will continue to relfect and see how this journey will help me in the future. I miss everyone that I have met so much already and hope to see you all soon.

This isn’t a goodbye its just a , see ya for now.

Today we visited the Newseum, it was an incredible place and an amazing experience. There were many interesting exhibits that made me question what journalism is as a whole. Two of the exhibits that touched me the deepest were the 9/11 and the Pulitzer prize photo gallery. Both of these exhibits had shocking images that when first published caused controversy. It made me think when does photojournalism go to far, but more importantly how do you maintain the connections between humans while still getting the story.

While in the 9/11 exhibit there was an extremely touching video on the reporters that covered that story in New york City when the towers were hit. The thing that stood out for me was a conversation that a reporter has with a police women. The women reporter was so wrapped up in getting the images of the burning towers that she had no human connection between herself and all of the other people at ground zero. The women reporter was ready to risk her life, there was no second thought in her mind. The touching part of this story is when the police women would no longer let her go forward. The officer was only worried about one thing, lives being saved. This made me think, why was it so easy for the officer to realize what was at stake when that hadn’t even occurred to the reporter.

Has journalism as a whole lost the ability to see the human side of a story or are they only able to see the facts and what they feel needs to be shared. The Pulitzer prize room made me question things in the same way. Some photos were inspirational and lovely however some were gruesome, hard to look at and made your heart sink. One particular photo was a firing line of men killing other men. Such a moment is raw, and one that film shouldn’t always capture. A look into someones finial moments before death pushes something that maybe shouldn’t be touched. Photojournalism bring stories to life and touches people in a more deep and personal way. I am a firm believer in getting the truth as we know it out into the world. The issue with is when the human connection and empathy is lost just to get a good photo.

Getting a message into the world and sharing a story that needs to be heard is the goal for many journalists. The facts about humans should be shared with other humans, I am afraid however that somewhere along the line journalism as a whole has lost the human connection of caring. Letting innocent people die, capturing moments of death or simply forgetting about your own safety are decisions that reporters and photographers make every day, when journalists take human connections out of their job, do they go to far. There is no clear cut answer on this issue, but sometimes line shouldn’t be crosses, or even pushed.
